- Victor Harbour: A smaller town, this is where you’ll find a number of parks with local Australian fauna. The Urimbirra Open-Range Wildlife Park has pet kangaroos and koalas, and you can also feed the emus. There’s also the Granite Island Recreation Park, which is a hiking trail offering dolphin- and penguin-watching. You can also take a Seal Island boat tour from here.
Winter 2024 in South Australia
In winter you can learn more about the ancient Aboriginal history of the Kanawinka region at Main Corner in Mount Gambier. It’s an audio-visual exhibition of ancient Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and the eruptions of the two volcanos near the town. There’s also the Lady Nelson Visitor Centre, which has a full size replica of the HMS Lady Nelson survey vessel, plus fossils from the kangaroo’s Pleistocene-era ancestor, the simosthenurus.
